Renovation and transformation of a roof and interior spaces of a building of the State of Geneva.

Located in Geneva, near the train station, the Vuache 15 building is a building with a lot of history. Owned by the State of Geneva, the building is operated by the CFP arts for the ceramics section.

The project to renovate the roofs and the building envelope was made necessary by the serious state of disrepair of the building, requiring rapid intervention.

Our collaboration with the client and the training centre allowed us to analyse in detail the users' demands and the requirements of the ceramists' activity.

Our mandate encompassed the main phases of a project but with a very short timeframe.

  • January 2021: submission of the building's valuation
  • March - April 2021: Drawing up of plans and execution details and calls for tenders to companies
  • July - August 2021: work carried out during the school holidays.

The particular interest of this project is the glass roof located in the main space of the building, the pottery workshop. The objective was to keep the natural light of the space but to make it more pleasant in daily life, not to be disturbed by the heat and the sun in summer and to protect from the cold in winter.
We kept the existing glass roof as slim as possible, therefore we chose a slim steel profile and added triple glazing and UV protection. These interventions enabled the building to be brought up to the HPE-reno standard. The main challenge of this project resided in the adaptation of the premises, teamwork with the users to enable all the building trades to be as efficient as possible in order to achieve the goal of well-being for all the users of the site.
We were also able to work on the spirit of the colours. We decided to contrast the exterior and interior of the building. Keeping the interior light to absorb as much light as possible, but marking the metalwork and joinery in anthracite grey and painting the exterior in a clay colour to mark the spirit of the terracotta in relation to the school's section.
